I cannot carry a thousand pieces onto a plane
I have never been good at dressing things up. A smith talks with his hands, not his mouth. So I will say it plain, the way I would say it if you were standing in the shop with the furnace ticking as it cooled behind me.
For nine years my wife Ingrid and I ran Forge & Fjord out of a little rented workshop here in the States — two anvils, one gas furnace, and a wall of my grandfather's hammers that came over from Bergen when I was a boy.
Last month we made the hardest call we have ever made. We are closing the forge and going home to Norway. I had two offers for the lot, both liquidators, both telling me straight-faced that the fastest money is in the melt. I told them where they could put that.
So this is what I decided instead. I am handing the last of it to the men it was forged for — free, piece by piece. You cover the postage, that is all. Not because the work is worthless. Because it is worth too much to me to let it die in the dark.

Forge & Fjord was a rented workshop in the States, run by one smith and his wife Ingrid. Two anvils, one gas furnace, and a wall of hammers that came over from Bergen — worn smooth by a man who was shaping iron before I could walk.
